Community-Based Run Study Presented at CSM 2017 Connects Rate of Impact and Injury Risk.

Research collaboration used the MilestonePod to collect data from 77 marathon runners over 13 weeks.

Columbia, MD – February 28, 2017 – Milestone Sports, creator of the MilestonePod gait tracker, along with researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and East Carolina University found that runners with a high rate of impact were more likely to report knee and lower leg pain compared to runners with lower rates of impact.

Dr. Stephen Suydam presents study findings to CSM 2017 attendee J.C. Andersen, PhD., Director of Athletic Training at the University of Tampa.

The 13-week study was co-authored by Stephen Suydam, PhD. (Director of Research, Milestone Sports), Matt Evans, PhD. (Department of Physics, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire) and Richard Willy, PhD. (Department of Physical Therapy, East Carolina University), and presented at the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) 2017.

Using the shoe-attached Pod allowed researchers to move the study out of the lab and into real life. Seventy-seven runners completed a 13-week marathon and half-marathon training course while wearing a Pod on their shoes. Data was downloaded via BLE to the MilestonePod App, which could then be analyzed by the researchers in minute-by-minute form. The primary metrics used in the study were rate of impact (also known as vertical average load rate), cadence, duration and distance.

In addition, each participant responded to a weekly online survey that assessed lower extremity pain and location (hip/back, knee, lower leg/ankle, foot). X2 logistical fit tests were used to compare occurrence of pain reported in a given week to weekly distance, cadence, and rate of impact.

“Distance running is known for high rates of injury, so the more we can find out about how these injuries happen, the better the industry as a whole can help runners stay healthy,” said Dr. Suydam. “High rates of impact can be a fixable problem, even by the the simple task of replacing old shoes.”

The primary subjects were college and community runners of all levels, in the unique Distance Running class offered by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Dr. Evans oversees the class, now in it’s third year of using the Pod as part of the curriculum.

“Using the Pod allows the students to not only be part of an important study that will help all runners, but also to understand their personal data through the MilestonePod App,” said Dr. Evans. “It makes them appreciate how they should watch their metrics to stay healthy and improve their running.”

The study was accepted for presentation by the esteemed APTA CSM 2017.

“This conference is the place to be if you are interested in the science of how people move and how this science can be applied to improve people’s lives,” said Dr. Willy. “It’s an opportunity for clinical research scientists, engineers, and practicing physical therapists to come together to engage in discussion about evidence-based data.”

The MilestonePod (MSRP $24.95) uses a validated algorithm to measure 13 gait and performance metrics. It is an ideal data collection tool for academics, researchers and biomechanists. It is often chosen after internal validation because of it’s accuracy, low cost, breadth of data and simple interface: users do not need to carry a phone, remember to recharge or push any buttons.
